Asia-Pacific Flights Get Disrupted Amid Iranian Retaliatory Strikes

(MENAFN) Air travel across the Asia-Pacific region experiences major disruptions on Sunday as Iran retaliates with missile strikes following US and Israeli attacks in the Middle East, according to statements cited by reports.

Tehran confirms that the US-Israeli strikes on Saturday killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with several senior officials, prompting widespread concern and precautionary measures in the region.

Airlines across Asia report cancellations, diversions, and stranded passengers as airspace closures extend across the Middle East. In India, authorities cancel approximately 350 flights and issue advisories for seafarers due to the escalating situation.

At Hong Kong International Airport, hundreds of passengers gather at departure counters seeking updates on suspended flights, particularly to Riyadh, Doha, and Dubai. Hong Kong’s flag carrier, Cathay Pacific, suspends all passenger and cargo flights to and from the Middle East starting Saturday following airspace restrictions.

Japan considers evacuating its citizens from Israel as early as Tuesday, relocating them to Jordan, according to reports. In Pakistan, Pakistan International Airlines suspends flights to the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar until further notice, while rerouting Saudi-bound flights to avoid conflict zones.

Malaysia Airlines extends the suspension of flights to Doha, Jeddah, and Madinah until March 4, while in Australia, stranded travelers spend Saturday night at Sydney Airport amid mounting cancellations. Virgin Australia reports seven Qatar Airways-operated flights canceled on Sunday, with five additional cancellations expected on Monday.
